The Pyschology Of Overuse Injuries
Why do we seem to get injured more easily as we age? It may have something to do with the fact that our brains are wired to protect us from physical harm.
As we get older, our brain becomes more adept at spotting potential threats to our safety and health. This is because the brain is constantly scanning the environment for anything that could potentially harm us.
This vigilance can sometimes work against us, however, when it comes to overuse injuries. The brain is quick to spot any slight changes in our movement patterns or posture that could lead to an injury. And so, it will send out warning signals telling us to stop what we are doing before we hurt ourselves.
Unfortunately, these warning signals can sometimes be false alarms. They may be triggered by something as innocuous as a change in the weather or a new pair of shoes. Or, they may be caused by stress or anxiety which can cause our muscles to tighten up and increase the risk of injury.
Whatever the cause, these false alarm signals can make us very cautious about moving our bodies and this can lead to us becoming less active overall. This inactivity then puts us at even greater risk of developing overuse injuries as our muscles and joints become weaker and less able to support our bodyweight.
We all know that feeling when we want to try something new, but we’re just not sure if it’s worth the risk. That’s where The Experiment comes in!

But then, the results come back. And they’re not what you were expecting. Suddenly, all of your hard work feels like it was for nothing.
It’s natural to feel discouraged when the results of your efforts don’t meet your expectations. But it’s important to remember that disappointment is a part of life and that setbacks can actually be opportunities for growth. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you find yourself facing the dreaded results:
1. Take a step back
When you’re feeling disappointed, it can be tempting to dwell on what went wrong and beat yourself up about it. But dwelling on your mistakes will only make you feel worse and is unlikely to help you fix the problem. So instead of dwelling, take a step back and try to look at the situation objectively. What can you learn from this experience? How can you do better next time?
2. Talk to someone who can help
If you’re struggling to understand why your results weren’t what you wanted them to be, talking to someone who knows more about the situation can be helpful. This person could be a mentor, teacher, or supervisor who can give you some insight into what might have gone wrong and how you can improve next time around. Of course, not every discussion is going to be perfect. There will always be disagreements and people who feel strongly about their beliefs. But that doesn’t mean we should shy away from discussions altogether. In fact, it’s important to have healthy debate in order to grow and learn.
So how do you have a productive discussion? Well, there are a few things you can keep in mind:
1) Be respectful of others’ opinions, even if you don’t agree with them. Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and feelings on a subject, so try to be open-minded.
2) Listen as much as you speak. It’s easy to get caught up in our own arguments and forget to really hear what the other person is saying. So make sure you’re taking the time to listen carefully and understand where they’re coming from.
3) Avoid getting personal. When emotions start running high, it can be tempting to attack the other person instead of their argument. But this will only make the situation worse and won’t help anyone learn anything new. Stick to discussing the issue at hand without getting wrapped up in personal attacks or name-calling.
4) Keep an open mind yourself! Just because you hold a certain belief doesn’t mean it’s set in stone forever – we all have the ability to change our minds if presented with new information or perspectives .
