Many Americans will suffer some kind of neck and back pain during their lives. The neck is vulnerable. Containing the jugular vein, throat, spinal cord and carotid artery, it lacks protection compare to other parts of the body, like the torso. Injuries can take place anywhere, on bikes, in cars, on top of ladders or stairs. But did you know that it could also occur while you sleep? Poor sleeping habits can plague the soft neck tissue, orthopedics say. Proper precautions to protect the neck go a long way. And many health professionals will recommend orthopedic pillows, designed with orthopedic guidelines in mind for proper alignment during sleep. Sizes and firmness vary; choosing which the right orthopedic pillow will depend on personal preferences and preferred sleeping position.

Many people prefer to sleep on their backs and sides. If this is the case, then consider a pillow such as the CervAlign, which is designed to improve neck support for back sleeping as well as maximize comfort during side sleeping. A curved design allows room for shoulders while an indented center helps to support the neck while sleeping on the side. Often people will pile on additional pillows for extra support. A bad idea. In general, most health experts recommend using one pillow. They reason that during the night, pillows will shift, resulting in uneven support. Even worst, additional pillows may cause a neck strain. These days, there are multiple pillows to meet every need. So instead of buying a second pillow, consider one like the Core Basic Water Pillow. Adaptable to changing needs, it allows people to achieve desired firmness at any given moment. An enclosed therapeutic water chamber offers the flexibility of filling the pillow with additional water. Add more water for additional firmness; release water for softer support.

Most people sleep in the side position and this preference increases as age advances along with increased periods of postural immobility, which lasts between 45 and 110 minutes. With a trend towards increased immobility, choice of pillows becomes more important to avoid the negative effects of poor posture. While increasing periods of immobility are noted, adults tend to shift positions 11 to 13 times per night. It is therefore important to use pillows which not only support the neck in proper posture, but also accomodate changing positions. Poor neck posture during the night effects pain sensitive structures of the neck and may be responsible for producing neck pain and stiffness upon waking, headaches and shoulder and/or arm pain. Neck related headaches are related to the upper part of the neck, while shoulder and arm pain can be referred from the lower levels of the neck; so pillows should provide support to all levels of the neck. Accordingly, pillow position may be related to specific areas as headaches may indicate rotational torsion from pillow which do not provide the correct surface for neutral positioning in the coronal or left and right rotational planes, while shoulder and/or arm pain may indicate pillows that lack a level support in sagittal or front and back planes. Neck pillows should also provide support in the left and right flexion plane which can relate to shoulder and arm pain and/or numbness. While in the side position with the left side up, pillows that are too high may cause undue stretching of the right neck and shoulder muscles, while compressing nerves and/or blood vessels of the left side of the neck.

The support system for the head and neck is integral to the shape of the pillow and relieves pressure of body parts associated with the head and neck, such as the shoulders and arms, and thus decreases pressure points associated with muscle, ligaments, bursae, and bony prominences. This arrangement increase circulation to the skin and underlying connective tissue so as to deliver increased oxygen. Properly designed neck pillows reduce pressure on the shoulders and arms in the lateral position and provides a therapeutic cervical position in a laterally reclining user while providing a soft, comfortable supportive surface to conform to the user's temporal-mandibular joint, mandible, and other facial bones and features. Support for the neck in the supine position encourages the healthy lordotic curvature of the cervical spine. Neck pillows may provide a very slight degree of therapeutic traction and/or decompression to a user's neck. This traction or decompression force generally improves intra-articular circulation, decreases muscle tension, improves circulation and decompresses the intervertebral discs.
